• This course will focus on introducing and improving student leadership skills specific to band communities. Major course topics will include group psychology, problem solving, motivational concepts, discipline concerns and issues, team work, teaching techniques for drill and sectionals, communication, and positive role modeling. Case studies and interaction with current leaders in high school and college band programs will also be included in the curriculum. This course is designed for both novice and experienced leadership members as well as those students aspiring to eventually serve in a leadership capacity in a band program. Additional material will be provided to help students prepare for an audition for a leadership position in their band program.

  • This is part one of a two part course designed for students currently serving in a leadership position in their band program or have been recommended to take this course by their band director. This course will focus on the current trends and issues in leadership, self-analysis and improvement, discipline issues, improving and maintaining team work, conflict resolution, delegation, and task and goal management. In addition to providing structured content that will cover these key areas, students will also actively participate in discussions with other student leaders, instructors, and band directors about their specific leadership issues and needs. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with former high school student leaders who are currently serving as leaders in college programs, businesses, drum corps, and many other types of organizations.
